Indus Maths Club had organized 2 Mathematics Workshops in the Month of May 2010, one for primary school students while the other for secondary & higher secondary school students. The workshops were organized in two batches for each group in Parle Tilak Vidyalaya English Medium School in Vile Parle, Mumbai.
It was indeed satisfying to see that all the batches got overwhelming response from students and their parents making all the batches full. In fact, we had to say ‘NO’ to many parents due to the fear of lack of effectiveness in the coaching with the increased batch size.
Following are some statistics about the workshop:
Workshop 1 – Batch 1: 7th – 8th – 9th May 2010
Meant for students in 3rd to 5th standard
Total students attended: 36
Workshop 2 – Batch 1: 7th – 8th – 9th May 2010
· Meant for students in 6th to 10th standard
· Total students attended: 34
Workshop 1 – Batch 2: 21st – 22nd – 23rd May 2010
· Meant for students in 3rd to 5th standard
· Total students attended: 33
Workshop 2 – Batch 2: 21st – 22nd – 23rd May 2010
· Meant for students in 6th to 10th standard
· Total students attended: 36
Total Students Attended: 139
Students from different schools in Mumbai participated such as Parle Tilak Vidyalaya, Madhavrao Bhagwat high school, Paranjpe high school, Jamnabai Narsee, Lilavatibai Podar high school, St. Xaviers, Orion high school, CNMS, Canosa, Thakur public school, Bombay Scottish, Balmohan vidyamandir, Raja Shivaji high school, Hiranandani public school, Maneck high school, Bombay Cambridge, Utpal Sanghvi high school, and Nanavati high school.
There were students who attended the workshop who live in places like Vishakapattanam, Surat, and Delhi and who had come here for their vacations.
Following is snapshot of photos taken during the workshop:
We were really taken by surprise by such an amazing response and the interest the students and their parents have in the serious subject like Mathematics. The success of the workshop also emphasized the fact that if we teach students with innovative content and seek their active participation in learning then learning never remains a burden but it in fact becomes an ever enriching activity which students are bound to enjoy. This also makes the learning process quite effective.
At the outset, on the behalf of the club, I would like to thank those who made our initiative successful. The students, their parents (not just participating but those who made enquiries) who showed the thrust for learning, Parle Tilak Vidyalaya Association who had readily allowed us to use their Drawing Room to conduct the workshop, the staff of the school, all the newspapers who carried a brief about our workshop, of course, to all the club members who designed and conducted the workshop to perfection.
With such kind of response and encouragement, in future, we plan to conduct more innovative and novel workshops and courses on Mathematics starting with a detailed course on Vedic Mathematics for primary as well as secondary students scheduled to be started in September 2010 in Parle Tilak Vidyalaya - English Medium School. We would keep you posted with updates related to this course on this blog.
